"A loss to the nation": George W. Bush recalls the 84-year-old Dick Cheney

The death of former US Vice President Dick Cheney at the age of 84 is described as "a loss to the nation and a sadness to his friends" by former President George W. Bush.

According to his family, Cheney, who served as vice president under President Bush from 2001 to 2009, passed away on Monday night due to complications from pneumonia and heart and vascular illness.

Read their statement in its entirety. They also add, "Dick Cheney was a terrific and kind man who taught his children and grandkids to love our nation, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, generosity, and fly fishing."

After spending ten years in the House of Representatives and serving as President Gerald Ford's White House chief of staff in the 1970s, Cheney was appointed defense secretary in 1989.

He was an early supporter of the 2003 invasion of Iraq and a major architect of the "war on terror" following the 9/11 attacks while serving as vice president.

Cheney will be remembered for unintentionally shooting a friend on a 2006 hunting trip, and he eventually turned into a harsh critic of the Republican Party under President Donald Trump.
